13 Moons was founded on a deep belief — that all animals are our relatives, and that horses who have given years of service deserve a retirement that truly honours them.
How 13 Moons began
13 Moons was founded by Marcy Freeman, a Lakota woman whose relationship with horses is rooted in something older than horsemanship — in the understanding that animals are not property or tools, but relatives. Mitakuye Oyasin. All are related.
Marcy grew up with that teaching at the centre of her life. When she saw how few places existed that truly honoured a horse's final years — not just managed them — she built one. 13 Moons is the result of that conviction.
The name comes from the thirteen lunar cycles in a year — a quiet nod to the rhythms that horses, and Indigenous peoples, have always lived by. Here, we try to honour those rhythms every day.

How we care
Unhurried
We don't rush transitions. Every horse arrives on their own terms and settles at their own pace. There is no schedule to meet.
Individual
No two horses are the same. We tailor feed, paddock placement, and daily care to each horse's history, health, and temperament.
Transparent
Owners receive regular updates — photos, notes, and honest conversations about how their horse is doing. You are always part of the picture.
Dignified
We believe the final chapter of a horse's life should be as full as any other. Rest, companionship, and good grazing — that's what we offer.
